German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has sharply criticised US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for his comments on Germany’s decision to classify the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as a far-right extremist organisation.
Merz described Rubio’s remarks as disguised tyranny and deemed them absurd, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
During an interview, Merz expressed his belief that in the United States, there is generally a clear distinction between extremist and centrist parties.
“I have always felt that the US can easily tell the difference between extremist and centrist parties. I generally avoid interfering in American politics and have no preferences for one candidate over another. These were centre-political candidates, at least when it comes to political parties,” Merz said.
He also called on the US government to respect Germany’s internal political matters and refrain from making such political comments. Merz also addressed his upcoming plans to speak with US President Donald Trump.
“On May 8, I will have a phone call with the US president. We don’t know each other personally yet, but we will meet at the NATO summit in The Hague, or perhaps even sooner. We will have an open discussion. I will present our position, not just that of Germany, but also the EU. As Europeans, we have something to offer,” Merz said.
In his first interview as chancellor, Merz was asked about the possible delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. While he did not give a direct answer, he assured that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could count on the new government and Germany’s support. When discussing the broader Ukrainian crisis, Merz emphasised the importance of close cooperation with France and the United Kingdom.
“I will actively engage in discussions on this issue with the UK’s prime minister and the president of France. I will make sure we act together. Everything we do must be done together and agreed upon in advance. It’s a good format. And if we can bring Poland on board, even better,” Merz stated.
