U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted at a sweeping new trade agreement between Washington and London, describing May 8 as a “very big and exciting day” for both nations, amid growing speculation of a post-Brexit pact.
“This should be a very big and exciting day for the United States of America and the United Kingdom,” Caliber.Az quotes Trump as saying on Truth post ahead of a scheduled press conference at the White House.
“Press Conference at The Oval Office, 10 A.M. Thank you!”
The comments follow a flurry of media reports suggesting that a comprehensive trade deal between the two long-standing allies could be formally announced on May 8.
“The agreement with the United Kingdom is a full and comprehensive one that will cement the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom for many years to come,” Trump added. “Because of our long-time history and allegiance together, it is a great honour to have the United Kingdom as our FIRST announcement.”
He also suggested that more agreements are on the way, stating: “Many other deals, which are in serious stages of negotiation, to follow!”
As a reminder, U.S. and Britain are set to unveil a deal on May 8 to reduce tariffs on select goods, marking the first such agreement since Donald Trump imposed broad levies during his presidency. Trump is expected to announce the deal in a White House news conference, while Prime Minister Keir Starmer will also provide an update.
The agreement is likely to include lower U.S. duties on British steel and autos, in exchange for reduced UK tariffs on American cars and changes to Britain’s digital sales tax. However, food standards will remain unchanged. Despite its limited scope, the deal holds political significance, as both sides seek to ease trade tensions and stabilise economic ties amid global uncertainty.
