Following a high-level meeting between US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a delegation from Israel has embarked on a critical diplomatic mission to Doha. Their primary objective is to resume talks with Hamas regarding a potential prisoner exchange, a move that could pave the way for a ceasefire and a significant de-escalation in Gaza.
Witkoff’s proposal calls for the release of half of the Israeli prisoners held in Gaza since October 7, 2023, in exchange for a ceasefire lasting over 40 days, Caliber.Az reports via Arab media.
The agreement would also include the delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid to the region and open the door to negotiations on a phased end to the ongoing conflict. The proposal is being seen as a crucial opportunity to bring about a meaningful pause in the violence.
The timing of these negotiations is significant, with US officials eager to capitalize on recent developments, particularly the release of US-Israeli soldier Edan Alexander. This act has been perceived as a positive signal from Hamas, offering hope that an agreement may be within reach. Whitkoff’s team is keen to leverage this moment to broker a more comprehensive deal, which could help stabilize the region.
Sources close to the negotiations have expressed cautious optimism, suggesting that there may be a breakthrough by the end of US President Donald Trump’s visit to the region. However, the proposal faces significant hurdles, with Hamas needing to agree to the terms set forth by Witkoff. Should Hamas reject the proposal, Israel is reportedly prepared to escalate its military operations in Gaza, further intensifying the conflict.
