EU unveils plan to ban Russian gas, LNG, nuclear fuel by 2027

The European Union has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ending its dependence on Russian energy resources, regardless of any potential developments in the Ukraine conflict, European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen said.

Speaking ahead of an informal meeting of EU energy ministers in Poland, Jørgensen emphasized that the European Commission has drawn a firm line, declaring that not "a single molecule" of Russian energy will be purchased moving forward, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

“The European Commission has presented a comprehensive plan to phase out Russian energy imports. We have made it unequivocally clear that we do not intend to buy even a single molecule of Russian resources—regardless of any ongoing or future negotiations, including those related to the war in Ukraine,” Jørgensen stated.

The Commission’s blueprint, unveiled last week, outlines a timeline for EU member states to completely eliminate their reliance on Russian energy supplies—particularly liquefied natural gas (LNG) and nuclear fuel—by the end of 2027. The proposal marks a significant escalation in the bloc’s efforts to decouple from Russian hydrocarbons, which have historically played a central role in Europe's energy mix.

This ambitious energy transition plan must now secure the endorsement of all EU member states before implementation can begin.

The EU has progressively tightened restrictions on Russian energy imports since the onset of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. While earlier measures included bans on coal and seaborne crude oil, this latest proposal extends the embargo to previously less-regulated areas such as LNG and nuclear technology.

If adopted, the plan would further deepen the EU’s pivot toward diversified energy sources, including increased imports from alternative suppliers and accelerated investment in renewables.
