Baku Military Court screened disturbing video evidence as part of the ongoing trial of Armenian nationals accused of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during the First Karabakh War.
The footage, reportedly filmed during the Armenian occupation of Azerbaijan’s Zangilan district and Zilanli village in the Gubadli district, offers a grim glimpse into the brutality of the conflict, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
The video shows the charred and lifeless bodies of Azerbaijani policemen killed during the assault. Armenian servicemen can be heard speaking in the background, declaring territorial gains and outlining their intentions to advance further.
"We have taken this height. Further from here is Iran. After that, we will move to Zangilan. Over there, towards Araz – Zangilan. We have fulfilled the promise of our ancestors, we have reached our goal," one Armenian soldier is heard saying.
The footage also shows Armenian troops singing the nationalist song “Rise Up, Dashnak Dro” beneath a flag bearing the emblem and inscription of the Dashnaktsutyun, a reference to the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, a nationalist political party.
This evidence was presented as part of the trial involving Armenian citizens charged with a broad range of offenses, including genocide, war crimes, the preparation and waging of a war of aggression, violations of the laws and customs of war, terrorism, financing of terrorism, and the illegal seizure and retention of power.
Court proceedings are scheduled to resume on May 16, as Azerbaijan continues its legal efforts to hold individuals accountable for atrocities committed during the decades-long conflict over Karabakh.
