Tokayev: Too early to discuss another presidential term

Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said on Sunday that it was too early to discuss whether he would seek another presidential term.

Axar.az reports, citing Kazinform, that speaking to journalists after voting in the election of Qurultay deputies, Tokayev said the Constitutional Court had lawfully granted him the right to seek re-election, but stressed that he was not ready to speculate about future elections.

He said Kazakhstan should instead focus on pressing domestic priorities, including using the National Fund to finance construction and social projects.

“I am ready to use the National Fund for these purposes. Why should we keep money in securities abroad when it can be used for the benefit of the people? I am against sitting on this money like a dog in the manger. In other words, it must serve the people, our citizens,” Tokayev said.

Asked when he could provide a clearer answer about his political plans, Tokayev said: “So let us meet again. Perhaps next year I will give you a more concrete answer.”
