A passenger train derailed in southern Mexico on Sunday, killing at least 13 people and injuring 98 others, five of them seriously.
Axar.az, citing NBC, reports that the Interoceanic Train left the tracks while navigating a curve near the town of Nizanda in Oaxaca state, disrupting a key rail route linking the Pacific and Gulf coasts.
Authorities said 241 passengers and nine crew members were on board.
President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the casualties and ordered senior officials to the site to assist victims’ families. Emergency responders from multiple agencies were deployed to rescue the injured.
The train, inaugurated in 2023, is part of a major government infrastructure project aimed at turning the Isthmus of Tehuantepec into an international trade corridor.
