US President Donald Trump offered a glimpse into how he predicts the upcoming high-profile direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia might develop.
A correspondent from the American CBS News broadcaster, Jennifer Jacobs, has quoted one of Trump's remarks via an X post that he is said to have made during his visit to Qatar on May 14.
According to Jacobs, Trump teased some news on Russia-Ukraine, quoting the president as having said during a conversation with the Qatari Emir that he thinks "we’re having some pretty good news coming out of there today [May 14] and maybe tomorrow and maybe Friday [May 16] frankly. But we’ll see about that."
As Caliber.Az recalls, Ukraine and Russia are set to meet in Turkish Istanbul on May 15 for their first direct negotiations since 2022. The summit came about as a result of an indirect exchange of words between the Russian and Ukrainian heads of states in their respective public statements last week, after Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for the implementation of a 30-days ceasefire and direct talks. The Russian president responded through a night press conference, rejecting the proposal of a halt of military action but agreed to resume direct negotiations. While most participants have been confirmed, including Volodymyr Zelenskyy himself and several US officials, it remains unclear whether Putin will join the Russian delegation in travelling to Istanbul.
United States President Donald Trump is currently undertaking a three-day tour of the Gulf states for his first state visit since taking office in January. His trip began in Saudi Arabia, where he also met the new Syrian president for the first time on his last day before travelling to Qatar. His tour through the Middle East will finish in the United Arab Emirates.
