To regulate passenger flow, optimize train intervals, and improve overall service quality in the Baku Metro, comprehensive measures have been launched to separate the lines, "Baku Metro" CJSC told APA-Economics.
According to "Baku Metro", there are currently three lines operating in the metro network: red, green, and purple. Of these, only the purple line functions independently. The red and green lines intersect at the "28 May" station and share infrastructure. As a result, trains on the red and green lines can only enter the platform alternately — at best, with a 4-minute interval. On the section they share, this interval can be reduced to 2 minutes. This situation, especially at stations with 4-minute intervals, leads to increased platform crowding and longer waiting times.
The fundamental and long-term solution to the current problem is the complete separation of the green and red lines and their transition to fully independent operational modes.
To achieve this goal, the construction of the “Darnagul” electric depot has started. This depot will ensure the independent technical support of the green line, its complete separation from other lines for independent operation, and the overnight stay of trains.
After the first phase of the depot construction is completed, the next major phase will begin — the construction of a new tunnel that will connect the “Jafar Jabbarli” and “Nizami” stations. The existing tunnel, which has been in operation since 1976, will be modified, and an additional 200-meter tunnel will be constructed, directly connecting the “Nizami” station with the “Jafar Jabbarli” station. With this, the green line will start operating independently.
Since the construction of the merging tunnel will take place in a complex geological environment, based on the preliminary assessments of local and international engineers, it is expected that the work will last approximately 10-11 months. All technical resources will be mobilized to ensure the work is completed safely, with high quality, and as quickly as possible.
Additionally, within the framework of the project, the construction of an additional connecting tunnel between the “28 May” and “Jafar Jabbarli” stations is planned, aimed at ensuring the smooth passage of passengers.
Transport organization and restrictions during the construction period
The main phase of the project, the construction of the new tunnel, is expected to begin at the end of 2025. Starting from this date, there will be certain changes in passenger travel. During the construction period, the “Nizami” station will serve as the temporary final stop on the green line, which means:
Passengers coming from the "Darnagul" direction will have to exit the metro at the "Nizami" station and use alternative public transport to transfer to the red line.
Passengers coming from the "Hazi Aslanov" direction will similarly have to exit the metro at the "28 May" station and use alternative public transport to transfer to the green line.
The operation of trains on the Icherisheher–28 May–Hazi Aslanov line will continue as before, with no restrictions expected. On the contrary, it is planned to shorten the intervals on this route and make the service more stable.
To ensure minimal inconvenience for passengers during this period, the Baku Metro and relevant state agencies will work together. Preparations are underway for organizing express bus routes, and the public will be informed in due time.
Of course, this transition period may cause some inconvenience for passengers. However, it is important to note that this is a necessary step for transitioning to metro lines that will operate faster, with more frequent schedules, and in a more comfortable manner in the future.
Expected changes and benefits after construction
The planned improvements will reduce passenger congestion on platforms and shorten waiting times. As mentioned, currently at the "28 May" station, passengers for both the "Icherisheher" and "Darnagul" directions board trains on the same platform, causing congestion, chaos, and disorganization.
With the separation of the lines, this issue will be resolved. After the changes, passengers will be able to board trains for "Icherisheher" and "Hazi Aslanov" directions only at "28 May" station, and trains for "Darnagul" and "Khetai" directions will only be available at "Jafar Jabbarli" station.
If a passenger's final destination does not align with their current line, they can easily transfer between "28 May" and "Cafar Cabbarli" stations to continue their journey. This will make the boarding process more efficient, ensuring a safer and more organized waiting experience on the platforms.
In addition to improving platform organization, the separation of lines will also gradually reduce train intervals. These measures will enhance the metro's annual passenger capacity, increasing it by up to 16 million people. This development will significantly contribute to reducing the burden on the city's surface transport system and support sustainable urban growth.
