Romanian expert: Russia continues to act with an outdated imperial mindset toward other nations

Bucharest, June 30, AZERTAC

Vasile Simileanu, a prominent Romanian geopolitics expert, senior editor at “GeoPolitica” magazine, and professor, stated that Russia continues to apply its outdated imperial mindset to the peoples of the post-Soviet space.

In an interview with AZERTAC’s correspondent in Romania, Simileanu noted that Russia pursues a policy based on historical claims that contradict the principles of international law. Official Moscow employs various tactics to maintain its influence over the peoples of the former Soviet Union. “This poses a direct threat to the sovereignty of independent states. Russia exerts political pressure on nations beyond its borders, including countries like Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova, using an outdated imperial rhetoric,” he emphasized.

The expert highlighted that the eastward expansion of the European Union and NATO emerged as a security measure in response to such threats. “The war with Ukraine has demonstrated Russia’s willingness to violate legal norms for the sake of its geopolitical interests,” he added.

Professor Simileanu also praised Azerbaijan’s balanced foreign policy and its diplomatic efforts to maintain stability in the region, describing them as commendable.
