OSCE secretary general reaffirms support for Azerbaijan, stresses diplomacy over arms

During a joint press conference with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov amid his ongoing visit to Baku, the OSCE Secretary General Feridun Sinirlioğlu has affirmed commitment to long-term cooperation with Azerbaijan.

"The OSCE will continue to offer their support in the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia," Sinirlioğlu said, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

Sinirlioğlu emphasized that the OSCE will continue its cooperation with Azerbaijan in areas such as connectivity, transport, and other sectors, and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to long-term partnership with the country.

He also noted that he had expressed similar intentions regarding cooperation during meetings in Armenia and Georgia, which he visited over the past days.

“The coordination of a peace agreement text between Azerbaijan and Armenia is a major achievement,” Sinirlioğlu stated, adding that the OSCE is also ready to support Azerbaijan on strategic matters.

In the course of his current tour through the South Caucasus, he spoke of his appreciation of the peace agreement draft completion, expressing his hope that cooperation in the region will continue at a high level.

The Secretary General also highlighted OSCE’s strive to resolve conflicts through diplomacy, not military means.

"The OSCE aims to ensure wider security in the region through diplomacy and not through military means," Sinirlioğlu stated.

The OSCE chief reminded of the organization's principle while answering journalists' questions at a joint press conference.

He emphasized that the OSCE adheres to this concept across all areas, noting that the organization "strives to ensure security through diplomatic engagement. The OSCE has always focused on arms control and disarmament. These principles form the foundation of the organization.”

The OSCE Secretary General has been appointed in December 2024 after the organization had to postpone elections due to internal conflicts between member states since 2023.

Sinirlioğlu brings extensive diplomatic experience to his role, having served as Türkiye's Foreign Minister in the interim government of 2015, following his tenure as Undersecretary at the Foreign Ministry from 2009 to 2016. From 2016 to 2023, he held the position of Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the United Nations. In 2023, UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed him as the UN Special Coordinator for the Independent Assessment on issues related to Afghanistan.
