Democrats flip key governorships in US midterms

Democrats clinched a majority of governorships for the first time in 16 years in US midterm elections, further punctuating the party’s success across the map.

Axar.az informs, citing NBC New, seizing on a broadly toxic political climate for Republicans, Democrats flipped control of five governor’s mansions in states President Donald Trump carried in 2024, while maintaining power in several other battleground states.

Democratic candidates wrested control of governor’s mansions in Georgia, Iowa, Texas, Ohio and Nevada.

The most shocking flip came in Texas — a state Trump won two years ago by nearly 14 points, where the last Democratic governor was elected more than three decades ago.

Gubernatorial elections are being held in 36 US states as part of the November 3 midterm elections.

According to preliminary results, Democrats lead the overall gubernatorial tally with 28 governorships, compared with 20 held by Republicans. These figures also include 14 states where incumbent governors were not up for re-election this year — six Democrats and eight Republicans.

Two gubernatorial races had yet to be called.
