Georgia unveils plot for violent power shift in 2024

Georgia's State Security Service (SSS) has reported that a violent plan to overthrow the government was being organised by several individuals, including Georgian mercenaries from Ukraine, for 2024.

This revelation was made in the agency's annual report, which highlights the details of the alleged conspiracy, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

According to the SSS, the plot was to be triggered by the Georgian parliament's adoption of the foreign agent law and accusations of election fraud related to the parliamentary elections held on October 26, 2023. The report suggests that the conspirators had intended to leverage these events as a pretext for their violent action.

The report outlines that the operation was supported by foreign funding, with involvement from leaders of both parliamentary and non-parliamentary parties, as well as various non-governmental organisations. It also mentions that certain Georgian citizens, particularly some fighting in Ukraine, played an active role in the plot from abroad.

The report also revealed that the goal of the protest organised in 2024 was to instigate “Maidanization” – a term referring to the violent upheaval seen during Ukraine’s 2014 Euromaidan protests. The plan included triggering clashes with law enforcement, which was expected to lead to casualties. In particular, the protesters were allegedly going to paralyse key infrastructure in Tbilisi, including transport hubs, roads leading to government institutions, and strategic sites. Tent cities were also to be erected in central areas of the capital.

The SSG further noted that protesters had planned to provoke violent confrontations with the authorities by using pyrotechnics and Molotov cocktails, hoping to escalate the situation and force a deadly response from the police.

The Georgian government, through its security services, stated that it had uncovered the plot and was actively working to prevent any attempts to destabilise the country through violent means.
