President Donald Trump has warned that the United States may withdraw from ongoing peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine if a breakthrough is not achieved soon, signaling growing frustration within his administration over the lack of progress in negotiations.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on April 18, Trump said the US was committed to stopping the war but would not remain involved indefinitely if Moscow or Kyiv prove unwilling to compromise, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
“We're talking about here people dying. We're going to get it stopped, ideally,” Trump said. “Now if, for some reason, one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we're just going to say, 'You're foolish, you're fools, you're horrible people,' and we're going to just take a pass."
His remarks followed a stark warning from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who declared that Washington would abandon mediation efforts unless “clear signs of progress” emerged within days.
“We're not going to continue with this endeavour for weeks and months on end,” Rubio said. “We need to determine very quickly now – and I'm talking about a matter of days – whether or not this is doable. If it's not going to happen, then we're just going to move on.”
Despite initial optimism from the Trump administration that a swift ceasefire could be achieved, no significant progress has materialized. A recent spike in violence, including deadly Russian strikes in Kharkiv and Sumy that killed two and injured more than 100, has further complicated the situation.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to Trump’s comments, saying, “The negotiations taking place are quite difficult. The Russian side is striving to reach a peace settlement in this conflict, to ensure its own interests, and is open to dialogue.”
Meanwhile, US Vice-President JD Vance, speaking in Rome alongside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, struck a more hopeful tone. “I won't prejudge them, but we do feel optimistic that we can hopefully bring this war – this very brutal war – to a close,” he said.
