Turkish Cypriot authorities declared a three-day mourning period following the sinking of a passenger ferry off the coast of Kyrenia, which has left eight people dead.
Axar.az reports, citing Cyprus Mail, that the mourning period will be observed from Monday through Wednesday.
The ferry capsized shortly after leaving the new port of Kyrenia at around 12:10 p.m. Sunday while en route to the Turkish port of Tasucu. It was carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members.
As of 9 p.m., 241 people had been rescued, while 18 remained unaccounted for. Eight people had been confirmed dead.
The vessel’s captain and seven other crew members were arrested following the accident.
