Iran’s leader celebrates Spain’s World Cup triumph in message to nation

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has congratulated Spain’s leadership and people on their national team’s victory at the FIFA World Cup, describing the Spaniards’ joy as a shared celebration for the Iranian people.

In a post on X, Pezeshkian said: “The joy of the people and government of friendly Spain is the joy of the people and government of Iran.”

Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson also congratulated Spain on winning the tournament.

Spain’s triumph in the 2026 FIFA World Cup marks their second title, coming 16 years after their 2010 victory.

This achievement builds on a dominant campaign where La Roja displayed exceptional defensive solidity and attacking flair, defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time at the New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium) in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute following a move involving Pedro Porro and Nico Williams, while Argentina were reduced to 10 men after Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card.

Spain finished the tournament having conceded just one goal overall—the fewest by any World Cup champion—remained unbeaten, and became the first nation to hold both the men’s and women’s World Cup titles at the same time, with captain Rodri earning the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
