Dead seals continue to wash ashore in Kazakhstan

Authorities in Kazakhstan’s Mangystau region have reported the discovery of further dead Caspian seals along the coastline of the Tupkaragan district, raising ongoing environmental concerns in the area.

According to Lada.kz, 20 seal carcasses were found on 1 June 2026 on a coastal stretch between a desalination plant and the KCA shore near the village of Bautino. Eight sturgeon carcasses were also discovered at the same location.

The regional Department of Ecology confirmed the findings, noting that the incident was reported by local monitoring services.

In response, specialists from the laboratory and analytical control unit collected water samples on June 2 along the coastline near Fort-Shevchenko in the same district.

Authorities said the results of the laboratory analysis will be released once testing is completed.
